Tourism research topic focusing Maldives
by Admin ~ July 19th, 2010. Filed under: Tourism & Hospitality. It’s being really a long time since my last post. I can see some posts have even got missing in the move between my old and new hosting provider. In my last post (which is now missing) I wrote about how I came to switch to studies. The basic reason was the economic recession.
Now, I’m starting with my research proposal and I would like to base it to Maldives. I have some topics in mind and thought of sharing this with friends and other fellow bloggers. Anyone could give me a better idea or a comment on its effectiveness could lead me to a better idea.
Before I list down those topics, there are some factors that are taken into account in deciding a research topic.
- Importance to the country, people and the industry.
- Accessibility to the information / data, in order to conduct the research.
- If any other Maldivian conducted a search on that topic.
Now, here goes the research topics I’m thinking about.
- The next tourism trend in Maldives high-end market.
- How local population benefits from resorts in Maldives.
- Effectiveness of marketing Maldives tourism.
I’m open for all kinds of ideas and criticism as well (:D). Anyone who is working or have worked in tourism industry might have a different experience which you might think would be fascinating for a research. Good ideas can pop up in anyone’s mind, what you do for living doesnt matter, but what matters is whether drop it here or not.

Hello Ahmed -
Interesting to read comments from you & others on The Guardian website.
Rather than being impressed I get the feeling the Maldives is an oceanic version of Doha.
I come from Australia - big bad coal exporter - and when the BBC hosted a debate during the Copenhagen Catastrophe in 2009 recedtly exed PM Rudd of Oz said the aim should be for 450 micro-grams/m3 CO2 (do I have the units correct) to stave off disaster. The Maldives President had the opportunity to contest that recalling his government promotes a 350 level i.e. less than the present 390.
So I am inclined to believe he is just another phoney politician and the Carbon neutral scheme is greenwash.
In Bangkok in October 2009 in the lead up to CoP15 as the UN met a parallel meeting of the Climate Justice movement was held and I attended a session about sustainable tourism. The session concluded that the levels of cuts in greenhouse gas emissions were so demanding that the only acceptable tourism of the future apart from walking would be by bicycle or boat (rowed or wind powered).
So how about factoring this into your tourism study and build a new Carbon neutral plan.
Just to help a little, to ease the transition the USA has 3 or more nuclear powered aircraft carriers which carry a crew of around 5000 and a life span of 30 years. Why not suggest your president ask the USA to donate them to his plan and they could ferry folk back and forth to India?

Ricky, I’m very greatful for your productive comment. I can see you have a very clean view on this subject. No matter what the problems are or to which extent, realistic and genuine opinions make the difference.
As everyone knows the possibility of reducing CO2 emissions in huge is new technology that people are trying to invent. There is no certainty on the duration it will take. So, this is not dependable. But, as we struggle with that, we also need to findout things that we can conveniently do today.
I have another interesting topic in mind which is parallel to your suggestion: “political effects on Maldives tourism industry”. Since Maldives is greatly relying on tourism income and country being low lying islands, carbon neutral policy will also undergo an evolution in light of reality. If I go for this topic, I will definitely study the impact of teaching these problems to students at primary education. After years, when they are matured we can multiply the minds that think of our world, it will certainly make differences but consumes time. This is something we can conveniently do today. If Maldives president has any interest to initiate this in a global scale, he gives contribution while addressing his own political interests.

Just switched the topic to “factors affecting growth of tourism in Maldives in reference to selected tourism players”. I guess this would be more useful to the nation.
I’m glad for the comments, Thanks Chiro.
